After witnessing remarkable, life-quality improvement of my 15 year old Chihuahua, The Boo, after her stem cell procedure, I approached Dr. Nicole Rickard, of Chase Farm Veterinary Hospital in Dartmouth, MA about possible therapy for Doink, my 14 year old neutered male Chihuahua.
Back in 2014, after surgery for bladder stones, Doink was also diagnosed with Cushing's Syndrome. Fortunately, we are able to manage this condition through special diet. The downside of the diet and the condition is that Doink is always very itchy...biting and chewing his legs. And, his skin in those areas took on the appearance of elephant hide.
To control the inflammation and calm the itching, Doink was prescribed Rimadyl and Apoquel. This worked for a while, however, as with The Boo, I became concerned of the long-term effects of the drugs on Doink's liver.
Dr. Rickard advised stem cell therapy to treat Cushing's was still in the research stage. However, the procedure could be performed as 'compassionate care' for Doink's chronic dermatologic issue.
So, in the late spring of 2016, Doink had his stem cell procedure. He had a follow-up infusion in July 2016.
The result was remarkable. Attached are photos taken of Doink in 2015 and one is able to see an area which he chewed hairless. Doink was on Rimadyl and Apoquel when this photo was taken. The second photo was taken in July 2016. My Doink is comfortable in his own skin, once again!
