Mulatu Astatke is a musician, composer, arranger and Ethiopia’s cultural ambassador.
He’s known as the godfather of ethio-jazz, a unique blend of jazz, traditional Ethiopian music, latin, caribbean reggae and afro-funk.
Born in 1943 in Jimma, Mulatu studied music not only in Ethiopia but also in UK and USA. Indeed, in 1958 he was the first African enrolling to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
In 2005 he contributed to the soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch’s film “Broken Flowers”, reaching a new public worldwide.
When he’s not busy with international tours, Mulatu lives in Addis Ababa, where he founded a music school and his own club, The African jazz Village.
Astatke recently published “Cradle Of Umanity”, in collaboration with the multi-ethnical band Black Jesus Experience.

Mulatu Astatke è musicista, compositore, arrangiatore e ambasciatore culturale dell’Etiopia.
È conosciuto come il padrino dell’ethio-jazz, una combinazione di jazz, musica tradizionale etiope, latin, caribbean raggae e afro-funk.
Nato nel 1943 a Jimma, Mulatu ha studiato musica non solo in Etiopia, ma anche in UK e USA. Infatti, nel 1958 è stato il primo africano ad iscriversi al Berklee College of Music, a Boston.
Nel 2005 ha contribuito alla colonna sonora del film “Broken Flowers” di Jim Jarmusch, raggiungendo un nuovo pubblico in tutto il mondo.
Quando non è impegnato in tour internazionali, Mulatu vive ad Addis Ababa, dove ha fondato una scuola di musica ed il suo club, The African Jazz Village.
Astatke ha recentemente pubblicato “Cradle of Humanity”, in collaborazione con la band multi-etnica Black Jesus Experience.
