A quick look at the RODE VIDEOMIC PRO, which arrived this week.
Also features some audio tests with our brand new mic, MAGIC LANTERN and the 550D.
Shot on the Canon 7D and 550D/T2i.
The audio at the start was recorded using the Lavalier ATR3350 omi-directional mic and Zoom H1.
So what do I think!
First of all the price! Its about £100 more than the old one but you do get a free dead cat (you have to send away) so in real terms its about £50-60 more. Listening to Carl's video the PRO version does sound better and it is much smaller than the old version. I wouldn't be able to fit the old version in my already packed camera bag. The size is a bonus as it looks less intimidating when compared to the old version. I was pleased with the way it captured the sound from me when I had the music on (both quiet and really loud) but there seemed no difference when I had the mic close and the music loud with the 3 different camera settings. If you know why this is please tell me.
The real winner is magic lantern. The ability to switch off the AGC is such a massive benefit. Rode suggest turning the mic up to +20db and turning down the anlg gain which is fine when you have magic lantern but what about if you have a 7d! (which I do). I am going to do further tests so make sure you come back.
