Manca Ahlin (Mantzalin) created a set of handmade rope installations for the new headquarters of Etsy in Dumbo, NY. The renovation of the former industrial building was based on an eco-friendly concept where only natural, salvaged or recycled materials were to be used. There are only a few individual offices for the main directors in the center of the otherwise open floor spaces, and they were enclosed with glass walls. When the office’s interior designers saw the large rope screen made by Manca for the Stix restaurant at the Indigo hotel in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, they felt that a similar open lace structure would create the perfect sense of privacy without blocking the light. In keeping with the Etsy philosophy as a platform where creatives sell their handcrafts, the lace designs play with organic lines that connect unique star-shaped colorful accents made of natural fiber ropes purchased from Etsy sellers. All three screens were entirely handcrafted on the floor of the studio using only scissors, hammer and nails.
