Bingham painted this frontier scene in 1850 and submitted it to the American Art-Union in New York City which supported the distribution of American art by purchasing original paintings and making engraved prints for purchase by the general public.
The art union, at the time, offered this description of the painting: “Every feature on the canvas is instinct with life. Indeed, it seems an incarnation rather than a painting, and give us reason to exult in the genius of Bingham ….”
This visual project combines digital images of Bingham paintings with original string music composed by Dana Mengel and performed by The Mengel Brothers String Duo. Individual Bingham paintings inspired many of these original Mengel compositions which are part of series called “Prairie Dances.”
The painting is owned by the Brooklyn Museum, New York City.
