On The Rise
fall 2017
synopsis:
A fun, interesting take on the process of a Philly-based rap group’s journey to the top! Inspired by Spike Jonze’s music video for Drop by The Pharcyde, this short film plays on the magic of shooting a video in reverse, leaving new details to be discovered by each viewer.
directed by Forrest Reid:
The best part about making a music video for me has always been the creative collaboration with the artist(s) whose song we’re creating visuals for. Upon first listen, this song is triumphant, fun, and all about Philly, so my goal was to create a video that matched this unique energy. I also love to pay homage to the filmmakers/artists that inspire me, and this video presented itself with a unique opportunity to incorporate beautiful cityscapes with a shooting style that was fun and unpredictable, thus the use of the reverse shooting technique also seen in Spike Jones’ video for Drop. The choreography for each scene was difficult, but once we all started becoming more comfortable thinking in reverse, and after a few weeks of shooting (and reshooting), we finally had enough pieces to put together the fully reversible puzzle. Viewers will be left feeling uplifted and curious; my hope is that they continue to watch this short film over and over to find all of the hidden details.
