Cendrawasih Bay was the last leg of Kalawai Adventure's expedition to West Papua. Whales sharks, mostly juvenile males, congregate around "Bagan" fishing platforms (lift nets). Fishermen feed the sharks offal and the sharks attract tourists, providing local communities a powerful incentive to protect these magnificent animals (as opposed to chopping their fins off for a one-time benefit). A neat example of how well-managed tourism can contribute to conservation.
