The protagonist of the video documentary „The Fortune’s Favorite“ is the Latvian opera singer (bass bariton) Egils Silins. Winner of several international competitions.
Egils Silins has been the first of Latvian singers to perform at the La Scala (1998) and the Metropolitan Opera (2000). The singer has won many international competitions, and has been appearing at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the opera theatres of Paris, Hamburg, Zurich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Geneva, Strasbourg, Graz, Barcelona, Cologne, Dublin, Bristol, Chicago etc.
During four years, the filmmakers followed Silins in the streets, hotels, and behind the scenes of the opera hauses of Zurich, Wienna, Berlin, Munich, La Coruña, Riga.
The film includes fragments of his appearances in „The Flying Duchman” (Riga) and „The Valkyrie” (Zurich), but more often, the artist is shown behind the scenes, preparing for his appearances; while travelling; or simply at leisure.
Being a vagabond might be the best expression to describe the artist’s experience of life. And although this might bring a certain unsteadyness with it, the artist would not want to stay at one place too long himself. That is why he is the fortunes favorite – he is able to do, as a reward of ones own hard work, a gratifying job, all over the world.
