‘deep water // arising’ is a piece about memory, place, nature and technology. During my commutes along the 95 Corridor in southern Connecticut, I am constantly amazed at the mixture of natural beauty and industrial decay. Throughout 2010 I found myself drawn to capturing these contrasting qualities in my surroundings. The article ‘The Call of the Abyss’ by Wendy Johnson sparked the main focus of this piece; technology’s integration and effects on nature. The article was written during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It related the spill and its effects on the environment to the Buddhist teachings of interconnectivity. Technological innovation moves faster than we can handle responsibly, it is implemented without enough thought given to its potential impact and consequences. This piece is a meditation on technology and nature and how they are both impacted by each other’s presence.
