This short film is an introduction to Paul Julien's life's work by Paul Julien himself. In barely five minutes time Paul Julien demonstrates how he was central to the reading of the pictures he made. While I do not want to negate his position, since without him the pictures would simply not exist, I do want to decentralise him and see what (other) meshes can be made if we connect the depictions to other sets of knowledge and experience.
The clip is based on fragments from a feature film length documentary produced by Mr. Cor Adolfse with Hans de Bruin. Mr. Adolfse Paul Julien's literary agent in the 1990s and worked closely with him to bring his life's work back to the attention of (younger) audiences. As part of his efforts Mr. Adolfse digitised large parts of Julien's legacy, and managed to get Julien's three most successful books republished with more pictures to accompany the stories. There were plans for a comprehensive coffee table book with Julien's photographs and hopes to have the feature film length documentary broadcasted. I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to speak with mr. Adolfse and to benefiting from the work and experiences that he generously shared with me.
