A new live project by award winning musician Debashis Sinha, Upanishads is an expression of a creative life lived in the intersection between world music, electronica, sound art and sound design.
The Upanishads project is purposefully wide ranging, confounding our expectations of the performance environment. A gallery performance may have an extended section of rhythmic material. A club performance may not contain any rhythm at all. Instruments such as the harmonium or traditional percussion are incorporated, but may be subject to playing techniques more at home in the western art music paradigm of free music.
Like much of Sinha’s work, Upanishads is a project that is open and uses the full array of performance techniques and tools to express an identity that both embraces and troubles our concepts of heritage, identity and tradition.
