Grass roots activist and spoken-word artist Mike Tabone and several friends have erected a mock jail right next to a full sized wall mural Mike painted near 19th and Hunting Park Avenue in the Nicetown section of Philadelphia. The mural is dedicated to the young people slain by street violence in Philadelphia. Mike will remain in the open air mock jail for the month of February in the cold with minimal comforts to call attention to the devastating impact of black on black homicide and crime in Philadelphia. Mike and his supporters talk to young people from behind the bars and on the platform about the realities of prison. Mike was released from prison several months ago after being incarcerated following an altercation that ensued when he attempted to defend a woman who was being taken advantage of by a drug dealer.
