“Resolve To Be Ready” was inspired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s campaign of the same name. At a traffic island in Wicker Park, we conduct a series of drills designed to build stamina, hone communication skills, and demonstrate readiness for the physical and emotional rigors of catastrophe.
I was interested in cooperative action and genuine tenderness in a public setting, and at the same time deeply skeptical of “disaster preparedness” as a public relations scheme that uses the guise of individual "empowerment" to direct scrutiny away from the policy decisions that endanger us in the first place.
