A time-lapse video of all the spectrogram images from Minute/Year, throughout 2016 – or, 366 images in 48 seconds.
Minute/Year is a multi-year, automated, durational sound-layering artwork by Kovács/O’Doherty, in which sound is automatically recorded, played back, and layered, in a resonant space (in 2016, an ordinary apartment living room), for one minute each day. Each day, this recording is then also published online, as audio and accompanying spectrogram image. Through this process, Minute/Year creates an accumulating archive of sounds and images, each one building on the ones that have come before. The sounds of daily life – of activities, large and small – become material for a layered index, which develops, mutates and degrades over time.
The audio accompanying the time-lapse is taken from Day 361 of the 2016 run of Minute/Year. Listen to all the minutes on SoundCloud here: soundcloud.com/kovacsodoherty/sets/minute-year-2016
