Chechen asylum seekers fleeing the repressive regime of Ramzan Kadyrov have been stranded in the western Belarusian city of Brest for several months as they attempt to enter the European Union.
The asylum seekers wanting to cross into Poland say border guards are denying their asylum requests, and instead having been refusing entry on the basis of lacking a “valid visa or residence permit.” A group of young men from Chechnya eagerly reach into their backpacks to show papers with the decision in writing.
At noon everyday, the small but echous arrivals hall of the Soviet era train station in Brest is lined with relatives and family members waiting to meet those turned from the border off the return train from Terespol in Poland.
