Pop District is the solo musical project of Toronto-based artist Chris Macintyre; already known over the last decade as one-half of mutant-techno outfit Jokers Of The Scene, and more recently industrial tech-noise duo Bulkhead. On his own, Macintyre employs the Pop District moniker to explore the nether regions of futuristic electro-funk and textural electronics designed to communicate to the dance floor and home listener alike.
With the success of 2016's 'Secret Dream' 12" (and it's sleeper club hit "Red Eye") released via Los Angeles imprint Distant Works, Pop District has prepared an LP to take the project into the new year and beyond. The 9-track album features cuts from last year's EP (previously unavailable digitally) sequenced alongside a slew of new material.
This new video directed by artist and musician Sean Dack, came about after working with Chris on the release of Jokers of the Scene’s 2014 LP End Scene where Dack created 12 unique music videos for each track on the album. The ongoing collaboration continued with this new work two years later.
Using a custom macro photography setup combining modern digital film making tools and lights with vintage and inexpensive lenses, Dack creates a miniature and strange underwater world of beautiful and sometimes menacing organic shapes; oscillating between the origins of life and an toxic oil spill. Conceptually this idea slots in with the title of the track, creating a micro narrative where “life always finds a way” and things perpetually change and shift, never as they were before.
