In the Arms of a Lion is Peter van der Merwe's first one man show, and first work major dramatic piece he had written, in close collaboration with director and dramaturge Penelope Chater. Through a series of vignettes, it presents the audience the pieces of the story of the childhood of Stephen the main character and narrator. The piece explores the tensions between sexuality and race, prying open some of the contradictions of growing up as a privileged white gay child in the dying days of apartheid.
In the Arms of a Lion premiered at Melbourne Fringe 08, played at Adelaide Fringe 09, Brisbane Festival Under the Radar 09, Adelaide's Feast Festival 09, the Dublin Gay Theatre Festival 10, and the Prague Fringe Festival 10.
In the Arms of a Lion was the co-winner of the Inspirativni Cena (Inspiration Award) at Prague Fringe 2010. This is 'an annual award, chosen by an anonymous and independent panel to a piece of work that has been staged on a world platform no more than twice previously or to a company that was founded less than two years ago.'
