"Ilona Sagar is an artist living and working in London whose diverse body of work spanning from performance to sculpture explores the relations between human behaviour and the system of codes embedded in public space settings. Looking closely at the dialectics between the architectural modernization and functions of the Swiss Church, the artist will activate the spatial conventions of the building through theatrical language and layers of narrative in a permanent installation and a performance on the opening night. Circle, a common feature of civic and corporate architecture and one of the church’s geometrical elements, expands in her work from a negligible detail to a leitmotif and formal device revealing a sense of repetition and rhythm that punctuates the life of the space.
"States of Matter is the first exhibition selected by the Swiss Church in London following an open call addressed to MFA students in Curating at Goldsmiths College. States of Matter addresses the encounter between sanctity and aesthetics, tradition and contemporaineity that transfigures the space and shapes its experience. Features of architecture, the church's function and ideology are articulated and questioned through the artist's works. Ilona Sagar takes this polymorphic context as content and involves the attributes and various purposes of the space in her work. Instigated by the overlapping, contrasting practices unfolding in church, she highlights and reconsiders its narratives into a larger sphere of social life.
