Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a common medical practice used within the transgender community. For those born female, testosterone can be used to develop masculine secondary sex characteristics including but not limited to deepened voice, hair growth, and fat redistribution.
I inject .4ml of a testosterone compound subcutaneously into my upper thighs on a weekly basis. When choosing HRT, I made a conscious decision to do this every week for the rest of my life. It is a privilege to have access to this medical technology. It is a privilege to have autonomy over one's body.
156 Band-Aid's represent 156 self-injections, or 3 years of HRT.
Matthew Swisher identifies as a trans*alternative body. His work uses non-verbal imagery to assert existence beyond the confines of language, beginning with his own body, which is neither male nor female.
Special thanks to Alexander Cano McConnell for his help with the production of this video.
