I worked on this short film since last spring, alongside my friend Karolina Villarraga, who originally came up with the idea for it, which we presented as our master's graduate project at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.
The idea was to conduct interviews with immigrant children living in Barcelona, then design characters and animate them using the actual recordings as voice-over, to present their different views on immigration in a light-hearted way for children (and adults as well) to reflect upon. After several weeks interviewing local children, we narrowed it down to four kids who we felt gave us the best sound bites to use in an engaging script.
It was meant from the start that the piece would be a 2D-3D blend, where CGI toon-shaded characters would appear in 2D environments. I was in charge of the 3D technical aspect of the film, such as the character models and their rigs, as well as the character animation and acting for all the scenes. Karolina, a talented graphic designer and motion graphics artist, took care of all the graphics, 2D animation, editing and post-production, besides directing the film itself.
