Made possible through a grant from the Herbert W. Hoover Foundation, a group of students from Malone University joined the University of Miami's Shark Research & Conservation Program for a week long expedition in Florida aboard the Field School's R/V Garvin to participate in hands-on shark research. Students conducted shark fishing surveys, measured sharks, took biological tissue samples, tagged and released sharks. Data collected will be used to support ongoing research projects on the conservation biology and behavioral ecology of sharks off Miami. Students were also trained in mangrove and fish identification by Field School and were led on a fish identification survey in the mangroves. The expedition was a great opportunity for students to participate in real science, get hands-on field experience in marine biology, interact with peers from other schools, ask question and seek career advice.
