The Family and Divorce Mediation program at Ackerman was inspired by the recognition that many relationships do end in divorce or a parting of ways (for non-married couples and parents who have never been married), and we at Ackerman were seeing many families come to our treatment center dealing with the fallout of an acrimonious parting.
We wanted to be on the prevention side of that problem, helping professionals recognize that there was a mutually respectful process available that left adults more emotionally intact and, for families with children, far more able to communicate and co-parent post separation.
We have a two tiered program - Beginning and Advanced Mediation - attended by attorneys, therapists, and occasionally other professionals as well. It is taught by three mediators, two are attorneys - Bob Collins and Marc Fleisher - and one is a family therapist - Elana Katz.
Here Elana speaks about the program.
