2017 RTDNA Regional Edward R. Murrow Award winning entry in the Continuing Coverage category
On a frigid January night Amon Bundy and a group of followers took over a federal wildlife refuge in Eastern Oregon. What followed was a 41 day ordeal that shown a spotlight on anti-government militia groups, their interpretation of the Constitution, and the public lands transfer movement. It also unnerved a tight-knit community, causing deep rifts between friends and neighbors.
Our station was there from the beginning covering the rally, turned occupation, turned standoff. This entry is a composite of our stories from the field covering the events as they unfolded and the impact they had on Harney County.
