Plastic waste is a global problem without a simple solution as it can take thousands of years for plastics to break down. Eloise Deconinck studied whether fungi were able to break down plastic polyurethane materials. She did this by using an enzyme the fungi naturally produces to break down lignocellulosic biomass.
