60 movable seats. 8 days. 1 location. This short documentary shows how a colourful pop-up park increased foot traffic by 190% in only 8 days.
Inspired by the work of US placemaking expert William Whyte, the Backyard Experiment project used time-lapse cameras to observe and learn about people and their relationship with public space.
The activation project was led by Street Furniture Australia and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, with support from the ACT Government. The park was designed by Context.
#BackyardExperiment research was driven by Street Furniture Australia.
The white paper and documentary received a 2018 Smart Cities Award from the Smart Cities Council Australia and New Zealand, 2017 NSW Parks and Leisure Research Award, and the 2017 German Design Award.
