The RUN! RUN! RUN! Biennale #r3fest is a unique festival that explores running as an arts and humanities discourse. Founded by artist Dr Kai Syng Tan and geographer Dr Alan Latham in 2014, the pioneering first event, then called RUN! RUN! RUN! International Festival of Running, was praised by the Guardian for its ‘positive atmosphere’ (2014).
The 2016 edition was held across 3 cities in November 2016. It focused on running as a metaphor and methodology, with a special spotlight on research, practice and activity by female artists and academics that have been hitherto underrepresented in dominant discourses. Sponsored by Leeds College of Art, there were film screenings, ‘live’ performances, presentations and discussions, held at Leeds College of Art, University College London and the spectacular International Athletics Indoor Centre in Cardiff. The curators were artists Annie Grove-White, Dr Carali McCall and Kai. The guests included 27 representatives from 16 academic, artistic and charitable institutions, such as BAFTA-winning author Catrin Clark, international theatre-maker Eddie Ladd, Free To Run (set up by a UN-based human rights lawyer to empower women and girls in conflict areas such as Afghanistan and Hong Kong through running), A Mile In Her Shoes (London charity for women affected by homelessness), alternative running magazine Like The Wind, filmmaker Joe King (Royal College of Art), 74-year-old runner and chartered psychologist Dr Doug Sandle, theatre academic Dr Andrew Filmer (Aberystwyth University), swimmer Professor Karen Throsby (Leeds University).
