It’s estimated a child is killed every day in an accidental shooting in the United States. It’s often the same scenario: A child finds a loaded gun, plays with it like a toy, and ends up shooting themselves or another child. KCTV5 teamed up with the Fairway Police Department to show parents just how quickly things can take a turn when a child finds a gun.
Nine children, ages three to seven, are brought into a room. Our producer instructs the children, they’re here to test toys. What they don't know is among the playthings hidden in the couch is a realistic looking toy gun.
Their parents are in on our test and want to see how their child will react when they find the fake gun. They’re watching from our control room along with the Fairway police chief.
Some of the parents are gun owners, others don’t have any weapons in the house. Some say they’ve talked to their children numerous times on what to do if they see a gun and they’re not sure if it’s a toy.
Within minutes, the youngest in our group finds the fake gun.
