The problem of loneliness in the UK, especially amongst the elderly community, often goes overlooked in light of more quantifiable diseases and social issues. But Manor Gardens seeks to bring the issue to light, pointing out the health issues that loneliness causes.
Created through the Casual Academy, a program that guides underprivileged young people through the filmmaking process, we see the world through the eyes of a lonely, elderly man. Interspersed with statistics on the issue and scenes of young people playing, the audience can’t help but empathise with the film’s subject. When one of the young people finally connects with the old man, we feel the profound effects of volunteering just a bit of our time to brighten someone else’s life.
