Some 22 months ago, Toronto photographer Kevin Kelly asked me if I'd be interested in documenting a photo shoot that was part of his ongoing series, GENDER, which examines the gender spectrum of queer performers in Toronto.
As I thoroughly enjoyed the images from his 2000 series "King & Queens", I had no hesitation in accepting his exciting proposition.
Since that time, I have filmed several of Kevin's shoots, met many of his wonderful subjects and enjoyed an insider's introduction to the charismatic and colourful world of queer performers in Toronto.
This "pre-doc" rough cut offers a glimpse of the essence of GENDER, and includes highlights from the series' inaugural show at the Dylan Ellis Gallery, Toronto, in June-July of 2015.
It is our aim to produce a short feature on the GENDER series.
