**HONORABLE MENTION FOR "BEST FILM" AT 2012 WILLIAMS COLLEGE MEC FILM FESTIVAL**
For Spring Break 2008, Purple Valley Films Media Cooperative traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana in order to complete several days of community service and to produce a short video entitled "Beyond the French Quarter". Recently, I decided I was going to edit a new film using the 11 hours of footage (much of which was unused in our original film) in order to celebrate community activism.
The film is outdated, but the message is not. As a media collective, we are disappointed by the federal government's response to the disaster. But we also are incredibly impressed by what many small non-profits and communities are doing by organizing locally. We hope this idea of 'Doing it Yourself' in the face of adversary and political frustration translates universally and is not bound within the politics of BP and Katrina.
Post-Katrina New Orleans is exciting, beautiful, heartbreaking, and incredibly inspiring. We have tremendous hope for New Orleans and we hope the imagery of this video expresses that.
