The Dodos flick between White Denim-styled primordial stomp and waltzing delicacy. The results are more affecting than Vampire Weekend’s pussy-footing rhythmicality, and more dance-defyingly asymmetrical than Yeasayer’s Ghana-via-Steve Reich four-four beats. And it seems the trends are aligning for The Dodos’ benefit, since the subplot of this year’s overdone Spring’s Big Thing story is that drums, after nearly 20 years’ employment as underwhelming backbeat in the majority of rock bands, are important again. Good news for the in-vogue American bands digging this particular patch, Dodos included. Meric Long and Logan Kroeber, with their respective ‘studies’ in West African Ewe drumming and prog-metal, thus have the edge over their compatriots on two fronts.
