Janbal tells the legend of a love story between man and fairy. The story takes place in the island of Hormoz in the Persian Gulf, southern Iran.
Musa, a local artist and a musician, collects the sequin decorated leg-covers “Paachaks” of native women from the washed-out rubbish found on the shore; he recycles them to make his own art. The legend has it that in the past, the Islanders would offer the clothes of their deceased to Mother Sea, so she could clean the person’s soul.
Musa’s art works lay the groundwork of a modern legendary story; the journey of Musa into the imaginary world is through the sound of his Instrument, the “Jahleh”, a percussion which was an earth jug to keep water initially.
At the crossroads of documentary and storytelling, performance and video art, the movie invites the viewer into the imaginary world of Musa. JANBAL invites the viewer to travel to the depths of a people's beliefs, imaginations, and esotericism.
