The heart of mankind is an idol factory! We produce objects of worship to take the place of the only worthy object of worship, the Creator God! Why do we do this? For starters, because of sin we desire independence from God. We will look to anyone or anything else for enduring satisfaction and joy. And yet, when we look to anyone or anything else apart from the Creator for these things, we consistently come away frustrated and disappointed. Secondly, we seek to create our own religions, on our own terms, that meet our needs, because we like to think that we have what it takes to get ourselves out of a bind. We want the glory and therefore most of our objects of worship resemble “us” instead of Him! We are arrogant creatures! But oh how we have been deceived! Supposed “independence” from God is actually slavery of the worst kind—slavery to sin. The only way to be truly free is to bow the knee to King Jesus! In our passage (Mark 7.1-23) we see that manmade religion and manmade idols, our manmade solutions, only exacerbate the problem of sin and separation from God! The human heart, according to Jesus, is the source of sinful depravity! We need a new heart; we need a solution outside of ourselves; we need a hero! Praise be to God for the gospel, the good news of God’s rescue mission for humanity! The gospel is the declaration of God’s faithfulness to provide humanity with a King-Savior, new hearts, forgiveness and reconciliation to God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ!
