The Swamp Rat is endemic to Australia and found on the coast and nearby inland from SE SA to SE Qld, as well as Tasmania and an isolated population in the highland of the wet tropics. A shy, usually nocturnal inhabitant of dense heath, scrubland and overgrown grassland. Here seen eating weeds rather than exhibits (good rat!) in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Cranbourne in the SE suburbs of Melbourne.
