Four years in the making, Transforming Landscape is the 5th work in the Carters’ Transforming series. This most recent digitally animated painting takes its subject from a sketch by John Constable for The Cornfield, 1826.
Leading a team of digital animators Jake Mengers has created an animated version of Constable’s study for the artists Rob and Nick Carter. Every aspect has been brought to life and the seamless 2·5 hour loop takes the painted scene from dawn to dusk. Only perceptible upon sustained looking, the landscape displays subtle shifts in colour and light as the clouds pass by, the sun moves in the sky and at night the stars and the moon emerge. Each blade of corn, each leaf on a tree, each ripple in the water has been informed by real time footage. It has been brought to life with over 7,000 man-hours of digital animation. The artists examine the boundaries between the real and the imagined, analogue and digital and the traditional and the contemporary.
