"Viaggio della sfere" (Voyage of the spheres) is my submission to the Vimeo Weekend Project Group's "SoundCloud Inspiration" project due on Tuesday, March 1st, 2011. We were asked to make a video based on music courtesy of SoundCloud user Vanchy (soundcloud.com/vanchy) "Catching The Simple But Happy Days (Electronica road song)."
"There is just one simple rule: Use this song in an original video that you make this weekend."
The entire video was shot on Saturday and Sunday (February 26th and 27th, 2011) and then edited on Sunday evening (February 27th).
Sony Vegas Pro 10
Phil Loarie (camera and editing)
There were three visual elements that I was working with on this project: an 8 inch diameter plasma/electrical discharge sphere, color gradients with key framing in the Vegas Pro 10 editor and 1.5" diameter acrylic spheres shot on a green screen. The first 2 elements serve as a background for the spheres. The plasma sphere was shot both against a green screen and without a green screen.
The actual size of the center (cathode) of the plasma sphere is about one inch in diameter but seems so much larger due to using the macro zoom setting on the Sony HDR-CX500v.
There are two pan shots of this sphere, one at the very beginning and the other near the half way point. Both were smoothed out by using a fluid head and a rubber band to pull the tripod lever.
The colorization was done with the "color curves" feature in Vegas Pro 10. The composite time line contained 5 video tracks at some places including the stereo music track which made it a real chore to render. I think it took 25-30 minutes to render this 4 minute piece on an Intel Quad Core based PC.
