I shot and edited this together with Jakob Pethick while volunteering at Nirvana School from January to March 2011.
# Nirvana School
Nirvana School is situated in Kottakuppam a village near Pondicherry, India. The School was founded in 1995 by Mrs. Samani. It is the only English medium school in the area. Today the school teaches more than 370 students. Most of the students parents are farmers or fishermen, and few are able to read or write English properly. However Nirvana School offers evening classes for adults. They can choose from subjects such as tailoring, IT and English.
The school is funded by international organisations and private donors. A students pays USD $2 a months. Local alternatives are up to ten times as expensive.
Volunteers from abroad are encouraged to help out at Nirvana School. Some stay for a few weeks others for several months.
The school is trying to sponsor promising students' further education and a student counsellor helps them apply. Without financial aid the students will often have to work to support their families.
We used a Canon 60D, with Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II and a gorillapod which turned out to be very suitable for stabilization providing additional points of contact. We used a Roland R-05 for audio recording. The whole thing is edited together using MPEG Streamclip, Final Cut Pro and Compressor.
