An excerpt from the world première of The Pains of Sleep by Julian Leeks.
Inspired by the Coleridge poem of the same name, The Pains Of Sleep follows the twists and turns of a night spent in torment. The moment of waking from a nightmare, fear, moral distress; but interspersed with childish pleasures and familiar comforts which emerge from the darkness then morph into chimerical apparitions.
In this final section, the first rays of morning sunlight creep through the window blind, bringing an end to this troubled night. A gentle calmness envelops the world, but something remains of the night.
