“ Theatre is a frame (game) constructed so that people can look at other people.” - Tim Etchells.
EpicTheatre explores the concept of antagonism in performance and the broader social realm.
In Epic Theatre, the ritual of theatre is reversed. Choreographer Shian Law subverts the action of entering and exiting to complicate the signifiers that suggest a performance is underway. The work blurs the relations between the stage and seats, the performers and spectators, command and obedience, and virtuoso and pedestrianism. Epic Theatre unsettles the hierarchical order of performance to attempt a democratic assembly of bodies.
Epic Theatre is commissioned by Rafael Bonachela for Sydney Dance Company New Breed Season 2016.
'...it’s a smart, stylish and engrossing piece of theatre, and brave new territory for a company like SDC.' - Daily Review
'Although he embraces stillness, Law's seeming inaction contains enormous vitality and intent – he even makes an appearance at one point to adjust the tilt of the odd head or two. When the dance proper finally arrives it’s fast, tight, pumping.' - Limelight Magazine
