“I can Hear you now” is the major project I am creating for my MA Photography at Falmouth University.
We live in a world more and more connected, but people are always more disconnected among them; moreover, their social relationships and behaviours are influenced by those norms that ask them to be always at their best, never failing, never communicating negative feelings or emotions.
Reasons that make screaming a liberating process could be various, but the aim is univocal: concentrating our discomfort in an unique action, in a strong sound able to free us even if for one single moment. The idea is transforming an act, screaming, commonly considered as negative into something with positive connotations.
This is the concept behind the naming: the project itself is a way to make this process audible to the subject himself, since, while screaming, he will be able to hear his own negativity flowing away from his chest through his throat and to the audience that will be enabled to better hear and understand other people’s “negativity” expressed in a more constructive way.
The Project will combine Photography and videos and I created this video self-portrait because, since it starts from something personal, I opted for an inclusive approach and to show the whole process behind those photographs I will create in the future, hoping to enhance a positive confrontation about this topic.
Including myself into my own project since the very beginning, my aim is to face the ethical dilemma “Am I allowed to portray other people’s negativity, rage, pain, sorrow or psychological issues?” The answer is a Yes if I can include myself into this “research by images” and become an integral part of something bigger.
