Urban Roots began four years ago as a way for Austin-area middle and high school students to connect with the environment. Today the project grows more than 25,000 pounds of vegetables and herbs each year, donating a sizable portion to local charities and food banks.
One of the most remarkable experiences I had while filming the video was a conversation with a 16-year-old girl. She talked openly about a period in her life when she ate only one meal a day, a school lunch. She described how hunger had impacted her entire family. And then, without missing a beat, she gave me detailed advice on how to take good care of the tomato plants in my backyard.
