Jews and Patriots documentary project's main goal is to carry the heritage of Jewish military history and tradition, starting with the remembrance of the Jewish Hungarian volunteers who served in the Union army during the American Civil War.
Jewish Hungarian soldiers have to be distinguished from American Jewry. First of all these volunteers were already professional soldiers at the outbreak of the civil war. Most of them were veterans of the 1848 Hungarian revolution and many of them fought in the Second Italian War of Independence as well. All of these Jewish men joined the side of the Union, without exception.
They were not romantic idealists of 1848 as some historians suggest. They were already not young dreamers in 1861. It was the United States which gave them shelter after the failed revolution in Hungary. All they wanted was to defend the unity of their new land.
Their experience had key role in the timeline of the Civil War since even in the Hungarian army most of them were officers and many of them surgeons as well.
The short documentary already reveals fascinating soldier stories and heroism about their contribution to the Union victory but we want to continue this with a 45 minutes long professional film with more details to present their efforts. In the short film you will hear about General Knefler, General Stahel, General Mundee, Colonel Utassy and even about Joseph Pulitzer but there are many other gallant Jewish soldiers to discover. Personally we think these heroes shall never be forgotten and they deserve that the American society will carry on their heritage.
