The Icelandic manifestation of Sisters Academy is planned in collaboration with Iceland Academy of Arts and Myndlistaskólinn. The preparations include a full course at The Iceland Academy of Arts, Arts Education conceived in the spring of 2016. Students from this course is invited to perform during the The Takeover at the upper secondary school Myndlistaskólinn in the fall of 2016.
Sisters Academy is a performance-experiment and laboratory exploring new sensuous modes of learning initiated by the performance group Sisters Hope. It is a project unfolding in the intersection of an activist intention to democratize the aesthetic through educational development, performance art as a method to explore potential new worlds and to expand our space of maneuverability and research as new way to collect and look at data. Sisters Academy is the imagined and performatively manifested school in a world and society where the sensuous and poetic mode of being is at the center of all action and interaction. It defines the primary mode of being and is the values on which all societal institutions are building – including the school – The school of a sensuous society. Between 2014-2018 Sisters Academy manifests in a series of Nordic countries and potentially beyond. We are currently exploring two different large-scale formats:
The Takeover - When we take over the leadership of a series of actual upper secondary schools. We transform the school completely through light-, sound- and set-design and The Sister moves in as the new ‘head mistress’ and lead the teachers at the school from the performative premise that they are now teachers at a school based on aesthetic principles – If the aesthetic dimension was governing society and not the economic and if tactile perception was valued as highly as the rational then how would you teach aiming at evoking sensuous learning?
The Boarding School - When we create a boarding school as a large-scale immersive performance-installation where everyone interested can enroll as students to explore new modes of sensuous learning with the ‘Sisters teaching staff’. This format also involves residencies by visiting researchers, teachers and artists setting up their research laboratories within the overall framework of the boarding school to explore the sensuous aspects of their practice, daily school excursions by real upper secondary school classes and seminars and concerts.
