Hydrogen will only reach its potential as an important segment of humanity's future global energy system if we achieve continental scale, providing CO2-emission-free renewable energy via a new system of high-purity, dedicated, underground, Gaseous Hydrogen (GH2) pipelines for gathering, transmission, storage, and integration of diverse renewable energy resources. We now need to discover whether such systems may be technically and economically superior to electricity systems for achieving humanity's Grand Challenge: Transforming the world's largest industry from ~ 85 % fossil to ~ 100 % renewable energy sources as quickly as we prudently and profitably can.
Therefore, we now need a Gaseous Hydrogen (GH2) pipeline pilot plant by which to discover and demonstrate the tech and econ advantages -- if any -- of GH2 pipeline systems vis-a-vis electricity systems. See presentation file (.pdf of .ppt) at leightyfoundation.org/earth.php
