Flood waters have arrived in the Kimberley. The Fitzroy River has burst its banks where it intersects with the township of Fitzroy Crossing. The raging, murky torrent is just centimetres from the lip of the town's main bridge. A few nights ago half the town gathered on either side of the bridge to watch the spectacle of the rising waters under a showy sunset. Most people were too afraid to cross the bridge but a few of us ventured out on foot. We could feel the groaning of the concrete beneath out feet and felt the bridge shake. And then two trucks come rolling across the bridge, their drivers determined to get to the pub. The awesome forces of the river flow on, the bridge holds firm. Ah, crossing the mighty Fitzroy in flood.
