This exhibition 'De Gruyter & Andeweg' at Stroom Den Haag with new work by Voebe de Gruyter and Juliaan Andeweg focuses on the subtle but unmistakable kinship seen in their work, presenting a new perspective on their respective practices. Collected from the surrounding air, crystallised or made up: unsuspected traits that nestle like a kind of memory in physical matter.
Both artists were born in The Hague. But the less obvious common denominators have a far greater impact; while they follow their own approach, both their practices are animated by the inimitable mythical god Hermes. Both artists experience and highlight specific material characteristics that are not immediately apparent. Qualities that reside beyond matter itself; in the intangible. For the first time, the work of De Gruyter (1960) and Andeweg (1986) is presented in a single exhibition.
