Since the 1990s, artist Paul Vanouse’s development of collaborative, AI-oriented cinematic experiences in participatory multimedia projects such as The Consensual Fantasy Engine (Paul Vanouse and Peter Weyhrauch, 1995-96) and Terminal Time (Paul Vanouse, Michael Mateas, and Steffi Domike, with 3D design by Patrick Lichty, 1999-2000) has carved new techno-scientific ground in documentary filmmaking and provides early examples of the practice now commonly referred to as i-docs (interactive documentaries).
