This is a raw scene from 2012: Devolution, but I have added a few experimental effects.
I thought I'd try using lights in AE to create a variety of effects:
Instead of the usual "day for night", I desaturated the image to 43% and then placed one, wide-angled spotlight below the frame at about 85% intensity.
To simulate the explosion glare of the molotov cocktails, I added an additional spotlight for each explosion and keyframed the intensity to coincide with the explosions (and keyframed a flicker afterward).
I added two additional spotlights, one for each molotov cocktail fuse/flame and keyframed the intensity to flicker and keyframed the position to follow the flame.
I added a third, narrow-angled green spotlight that I linked to motion-tracked keyframes for the lens of the night vision goggles. (I know that this is not realistic, but I thought it would look cool).
Flames and smoke are from VideoCopilot's Action Essentials 2k...
If you try this, just remember to make all of the layers that you want affected into "3D" layers...
(please note: this is at lower resolution than the actual footage)
