This is an extract from a 45 minute long performance, as part of the research and development / exploration of my final major project whilst still a student of The Cass. Utilising reel-reel tape technology I have created 'loops' of audio - through which I begin to effect, distort and deconstruct the recorded sound. It is rare to see both sound - and time - a physical shape.
The physicality of the performance - the ability to literally grab sound, to jerk and twist and turn each beat and bar. I am looking at these experiments as drawings - and as a narrative - for though the loop plays over and over, the processes once applied cannot be removed - this journey of deconstruction, of uncovering the hidden sounds and resonances of the tape itself being a one-way path.
I look to these performances as the creation of fiction from within fact, extracting unknown - or 'false' sounds from something previously known, recorded, written.
