Giant Music Boxes installation at Center for New Music 2014. The Giant Music Box with Pins was the protoptype for the Giant Music Box with Washers which was originally developed as an interactive exhibit for the Exploratorium. The Giant Music Boxes were my response to the widely held belief at the time that the only satisfying musical experience possible among strangers (museum visitors) was one that used a Pentatonic Scale. The idea being that no matter what notes people played, the intervals would always be relatively consonant. Being a longtime lover of those little music boxes, I decided to create a large version that could be played by anyone (with or without musical training or experience)- solo or with others. Just to push the challenge even further, I decided to use a 1/4 tone tuning- very small intervals that produced distortion tones in the ears when played by adjacent notes. I believed that the lovely sound of little brass bars would satisfying and beautiful regardless of the intervals produced. What do you think?
